Bible verses for anxiety

Last updated

Five King James passages speak to anxiety directly: Philippians 4:6-7, 1 Peter 5:7, Matthew 6:34, Psalm 94:19 and Isaiah 41:10. Each is quoted below word for word, with its meaning in plain English. A verse can steady you, but it does not replace care for an anxiety disorder.

Philippians 4:6-7: bring it to God

Paul tells readers to hand their worries to God in prayer and promises peace in return. In this verse “careful” carries the older English sense of full of care, so the line reads as do not be anxious about anything. The promise is that peace will guard you.

Philippians 4:6 (KJV): “Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.” Philippians 4:7 (KJV): “And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.”

1 Peter 5:7: you do not carry it alone

Peter says to pass your cares to God because he looks after you. It is a single sentence, which makes it easy to memorize and repeat during a hard hour. Many readers keep it on a note card or as a phone lock-screen line for bad days.

1 Peter 5:7 (KJV): “Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.”

Matthew 6:34: take today only

Jesus tells his listeners to stop borrowing trouble from tomorrow. “Take no thought” is usually read as do not worry, not do not plan. The last line gives the reason: today already has enough to deal with, so tomorrow can wait its turn.

Matthew 6:34 (KJV): “Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof.”

Psalm 94:19: when your mind will not quiet

The psalmist admits his thoughts pile up inside him and says God’s comfort is what cheers his soul. The verse gives you honest words for a racing mind without pretending the thoughts are gone. It is a good one to read aloud at night when sleep will not come.

Psalm 94:19 (KJV): “In the multitude of my thoughts within me thy comforts delight my soul.”

Isaiah 41:10: fear not

God speaks to his people and promises presence, strength and help in a single verse. Read the whole chapter to see who he is speaking to and why they were afraid. The verse piles up three promises in a row: I will strengthen, I will help, I will uphold.

Isaiah 41:10 (KJV): “Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness.”

When a verse is not enough

If worry is affecting your sleep, work or health, talk to a doctor or counselor along with reading scripture. Verses can sit beside professional care, but they are not a replacement for it. Getting help is a sound response, and many people of faith do exactly that.
