A five-minute daily Bible reading habit

Last updated

Tie five minutes of Bible reading to something you already do each day. Read one short passage, write down one thing it says, and stop. A verse of the day works well because the amount is small enough to repeat. Consistency beats length, so pick a size you can keep.

Pick a cue, not a time

Link the reading to something that already happens each day, such as pouring coffee or sitting on the train. A cue is easier to keep than a clock time that shifts with your schedule. Five minutes that follows a habit you already have is hard to forget.

Use the verse-of-the-day format

Read one verse or a short passage, then ask: what does this say, and what will I do with it today? Psalm 121:1-2 is a short, good first pick. Psalm 121:1 (KJV): “I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help.” Psalm 121:2 (KJV): “My help cometh from the LORD, which made heaven and earth.”

Write one line

Write what the verse says in your own words. One line is enough, and it should take under a minute. Writing keeps you from reading with your eyes while your mind is somewhere else, and it gives you something to look back on at the end of a month.

Use a streak, but forgive a miss

A streak counter gives you a small reason to return. If you miss a day, start the next one. BibleScroll shows a daily verse and a streak counter, with the full King James text free and voice narration if you prefer to listen.

See it in action

Five minutes can be one prayer and three verses, like this deck.

When anxiety hits at night, pray these before sleep: Philippians 4:6–7, Psalm 4:8 and 1 Peter 5:7.
